14 - 15th September 2019
As part of the Doors Open Days 2019 event, we welcome you all to visit St Margaret's Church and to learn more about our historical background and future projects.
Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free annual architectural event. It has been celebrating heritage and the built environment in Scotland since 1990, and it takes place every September. Doors Open Days is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days alongside Scottish Archaeology Month. This event is supported by Historic Environment Scotland. One of the central themes of this year's Doors Open Days event is to celebrate Arts and Entertainment.
St. Margaret’s, a grade A listed building, is considered to be one of Scotland’s finest churches, designed in the late 19th century by renowned Scottish ecclesiastical architect Sir John Ninian Comper. The exquisite interior has many beautiful stained-glass windows, also designed by Sir Ninian Comper, and a beautiful intricately carved rood screen. There is also a chancel area. There will be guided tours up onto the tower to view the stunning surrounding landscape of the Cairngorms running from 11am – 1pm both days.
In order for the building to survive, a sustainable end-use had to be found which would be sympathetic to the qualities of the building and respectful of its past history. In 2011 a group from the local community, recognising the special acoustic characteristics of St Margaret’s, began to organise musical performances of various kinds. In 2015 the St Margaret’s Trust was formed to take responsibility for using the building to promote performance, exhibition and heritage. Each year the Trust brings international performers to St Margaret’s in an eclectic mix of music and exhibitions to entertain and inform both local residents and visitors to the area.
